John Mahama has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president.
John Mahama took the oath of office on Tuesday at Independence Square in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, in a ceremony attended by world leaders, including Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu
The new president succeeded Nana Akufo-Ado, who took over from Mahama in 2017.
Before Mahama’s swearing-in, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was inaugurated as the country’s first female vice president.
The oath of office for both leaders was administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In the December election, Mahama returned to the post he left seven years ago with a mission to revive Ghana’s struggling economy.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate received 50 percent of the votes, defeating the then-vice president Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling party.
Mahama garnered 6.3 million votes, winning by a margin of 1.7 million. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) immediately conceded defeat in the election.
Shortly after the election, President Bola Tinubu congratulated John Dramani Mahama.
In a phone call to Mahama, President Tinubu expressed optimism that his return to leadership would bolster stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
