The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has ruled to halt the enforcement of its January 10 judgment regarding the Emirate Council Law of Kano State.
This ruling effectively removes Sanusi Lamido Sanusi from his position as the Emir of Kano, pending a final decision from the Supreme Court.
The court’s decision sets aside a previous order from the Federal High Court in Kano, which nullified the Kano State Government’s actions under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. This law had dissolved the five emirates established in 2019 and reinstated Sanusi II as the Emir and removal of the precious Emir, Ado Bayero.
Experts say the tussle for the Kano emirate throne between Sanusi II and Ado Bayero has revealed the shaky legitimacy of traditional rulership in Nigeria.
The judgment marks another stunning turn in what many are calling the Kano Game of Thrones.
The Kano State Governor and either of Sanusi or Bayero are yet to respond to the judgement.
