The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication claiming to announce governorship candidates in six states.
The commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, describing the publication as fraudulent and unrelated to the electoral body.
In a statement, INEC categorically denied issuing the purported announcement, clarifying that it had not made any special declaration concerning governorship candidates in the six states.
The commission urged members of the public to disregard the publication and refrain from sharing it, warning that the information could mislead Nigerians.
It also advised citizens to verify electoral information through its official communication channels, including its website, inecnigeria.org, and verified social media platforms.
INEC listed its official X and Instagram handles as @inecnigeria, its Facebook page as INEC Nigeria, and its news portal as inecnews.com.
The electoral commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate information and urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources, particularly as political activities and preparations for future elections continue to attract public attention.
The warning underscores the need for caution when sharing election-related information online, especially publications claiming to announce official candidates or decisions of the electoral body.
