Several worshippers have been confirmed dead following an explosion inside a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday while worshippers were gathered for prayers, triggering panic and chaos within the usually busy Gamborun Market area.
Eyewitnesses said the blast tore through parts of the mosque, killing some worshippers on the spot and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries. Following the explosion, traders and residents were seen fleeing the area as thick smoke rose from the scene.
Some residents reportedly attempted to rescue victims and provide first aid before the arrival of emergency responders.
Security operatives later cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and to allow for a preliminary assessment of the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of the explosion or the exact number of casualties.
Investigations are ongoing.
