Some weddings begin at the altar. This one began for me on a winding road through You drive. You turn. You climb. Another bend. Then another.
At some point, I stopped asking, โAre we there yet?โ and started wondering whether my navigation had quietly redirected me to ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐.
That was the road to ๐๐๐ญ๐, ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ข๐, on ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐๐, ๐๐๐๐, where ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ and ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง gathered family and friends to celebrate their marriage.
I soon discovered I was not the only one negotiating with the distance.
๐๐๐จ๐ง, ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง and I โ three longtime padi-padi โ had reached exactly the same conclusion. This place was far.
๐๐๐จ๐ง told me: โMan, I thought I was driving to
Then ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง delivered his own verdict in pidgin: โPaulo, I think say I no go get here!โ
That finished me.
Mfon, Samson and I had all made the long journey in comfortable cars, but comfort could not shorten the map. Different journeys, same long road, same destination โ and by the time we arrived, nobody was thinking about the drive anymore. The wedding had taken over.
Still, friendship has its own geography. A ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐ saying captures it beautifully:
โแปฬnร kรฌ รญ jรฌn sรญ แปฬrแบนฬ.โ
The road is never too far when you are going to see a friend. When someone matters, miles become details.
You drive. You show up. You laugh about the distance later. The road was long. The friendship was longer.
Once we arrived, the journey stopped mattering.
The setting was beautiful. The food delivered. The music kept calling people toward the dance floor.
People laughed, danced and moved from table to table.
At the center of it all were ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ and ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ, surrounded by the ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ and ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง families โ ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง on the other โ two families gathered around one beginning.
๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒโs family and friends clearly had the numbers. Our Nigerian contingent looked around and realized we had been swallowed numerically.
But not in spirit.
We may have been outnumbered, but we were certainly not out-celebrated.
Love does not ask for a census before entering a room. It simply fills it. And that day, it did.
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐งโs senior son is not difficult to spot. ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ has the build of someone who has spent time around American football: broad shoulders, a powerful frame, the kind of chest that makes you wonder whether ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฌ๐ก๐ฎ๐ might want to compare training notes.
But on this day, strength meant something else. Not tackles. Not yards. Not muscle.
It meant standing beside ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ and beginning a life that will ask for patience, friendship, forgiveness, loyalty and commitment.
A different kind of strength. A longer game.
I had celebrated with the ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ family before.
On ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐, ๐๐๐๐, their daughter ๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ married ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ญ in ๐๐ญ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ญ๐.
And even before that celebration had ended, the next chapter was already being written.
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ made sure I saved ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐๐ in my iPhone calendar. He stood there and watched me enter the date himself, just to be certain.
I told him, โIโm not going to miss it for anything.โ
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง, standing nearby, quickly added:
โYou better not.โ
That was ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง. Part warning. Part joke. Part reminder that, with this family, showing up matters.
Less than three months later came ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ and ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ.
One. Two. Three. Three weddings.
Three moments when ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง and ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ๐ข๐ watched one of their children step forward to build a home.
At some point, you stop calling that coincidence. You call it grace.
Which brings me to a serious question wrapped inside a joke.
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง and ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐, when are you opening registration?
One child married? A blessing. Two Double blessing.
Three? Now some of us are entitled to ask for the syllabus.
Where is the manual? The seminar? The PowerPoint?
If they ever announce a class on raising children who grow into adults ready to build families of their own, put my name first. I will come early. Notebook in hand.
Because beneath the laughter is something every parent understands.
A wedding lasts a day. Parenting takes decades.
Before the suits, gowns, flowers and music, there were years of feeding, teaching, correcting, protecting, sacrificing and praying.
Then one day, parents watch those children walk toward futures of their own.
The third wedding. Another prayer answered.
Mfon was there for all three weddings. So was I. That small fact carries its own meaning.
When friendships survive long enough, you stop counting only football matches and birthdays. You begin counting weddings, children, anniversaries and milestones.
Football introduced many of us. Time turned friends into family witnesses.
We are no longer gathering because somebody scored a goal. We are gathering because somebody found love.
For all the laughter, road-trip jokes, old friendships and family history, this day belonged to two people: ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ and ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ.
They were the reason everyone drove those winding roads, gathered, danced, laughed and stayed. Everything else was scenery. Beautiful scenery.
Because when the music stops, marriage continues. When the photographs are stored away, marriage continues. When the guests drive home, marriage continues.
A wedding celebrates love. Marriage must practice it. Day after day. Year after year.
So to ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฒ and ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ: may laughter live in your home. May patience visit often. May forgiveness never have to knock twice. May your victories be shared, your burdens divided, and your friendship deepen through every season.
If anyone thought ๐๐๐ญ๐ was the final chapter, ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง and ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐ have already hinted otherwise.
A ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ celebration is still ahead.
The details belong to the family and will unfold in their own time.
For now, just know this: ๐๐ง๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ.
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง is looking forward to showing ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ฒโs family another side of the story โ how a Nigerian traditional celebration can come alive when culture takes the floor.
๐๐ง๐ค๐๐ซ๐ bursting with color. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐๐ and ๐ฅ๐๐๐ cut into flowing agbada, elegant gowns and head-turning outfits.
๐๐๐ฅ๐ rising proudly. Caps. Beads. Drums. Music. Dancing.
Families making their entrances with joy and presence.
The kind of celebration where the clothes begin telling the story before anybody speaks.
The kind where culture does not sit quietly in a corner. It dances.
๐๐๐ฆ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง told me he is looking forward to showing the brideโs family how Africa celebrates.
I smiled. Because I know what he means.
If ๐๐๐ญ๐ was elegant, warm and joyful, the traditional chapter promises a different language of beauty โ colorful, proud and unmistakably ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง.
Traditional wedding. Nigerian style, Grand fashion. Loading.
Three weddings across nine years. One family watching its branches grow.
The road to ๐๐๐ญ๐ was long. The road of parenting was longer. But both arrived at a beautiful destination.
And perhaps there is still one more dance waiting somewhere ahead.
Some blessings deserve applause. Some deserve thanksgiving. And some deserve taking notes.
