Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, has died at the age of 88 years.
A reliable source confirmed that the elder statesman passed away on Thursday morning at a hospital in Abuja.
The source said the former diplomat and public servant had been receiving medical treatment before his death.
Alhaji served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and was widely known for his contributions to public service and national development.
Further details regarding his death and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the relevant authorities.
Alhaji, also known as “Triple A,” dwas born on November 22, 1938 in Sokoto and was a member of the Sokoto Royal family.
He joined the Nigerian civil service in 1964 and rose to become a powerful Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance by 1979.
He served as Minister of State for Budget and Planning before taking over as the federal Minister of Finance between 1990 and 1991 under the military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji was also at a time Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in the mid-1990s.
He was turbaned as the Sardauna of Sokoto in 1990, inheriting the revered traditional title previously held by Sir Ahmadu Bello.
