One of Nigeria’s longest ruling monarchs, the Akran of Badagry, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I has joined his ancestors at the ripe age of 89.
The Akran was reported dead early Monday, 12 January, 2026 after spending 48 years on the throne.
Although no details have been given on circumstances surrounding his death, the whole of Badagry is in mourning over the passage of the reverred monarch.
It was gathered that all markets have been ordered closed as the Oro masquerade is expected to go public.
Oba Akran, one of Nigeria’s most eminent Monarchs, was a politician and journalist before ascending the throne in 1977.
He was one of the longest serving Monarchs in Lagos State, having spent 48 years on the throne.
A member of the Action Group, he represented Badagry in the Parliament in 1951 and was Minister in the pre-Independence era.
He was also instrumental to the establishment of the flagship secondary school in Badagry, the Badagry Grammar School.
The late king was born in 1936, which makes him 90 years old as at the time of his death.
The late paramount ruler of the Badagry Kingdom, was a respected voice within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
