As the world once again unites to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, on 11 October 2025, the Sustainable Gender Action Initiative (SGAI), has joined the joined the global call for the enforcement of the rights of the girl child.
The Day of the Girl Child is globally dedicated to amplifying the voices, rights, and aspirations
of girls everywhere. This year’s global theme, “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our
Well-being”.
A statement by the Executive Director of SGAI, Mufuliat Fijabi, said the theme of this year resonates deeply with the mission of Sustainable Gender Action Initiative
(SGAI), as it continues to champion the empowerment of girls as a cornerstone for
building a more equitable and inclusive society.
“Across Nigeria and beyond, millions of girls continue to face barriers to education, safety,
healthcare, and opportunities for leadership,” the statement said. “Harmful practices such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, gender-based violence, and discrimination in access to digital and economic resources hinder their potential. Yet, every day, girls demonstrate resilience, creativity and leadership when given the tools and platforms to thrive.
“Sustainable Gender Action Initiative is proud to stand alongside girls in shaping solutions
and leading change. Through our advocacy, training, and youth-focused initiatives, we
continue to amplify their voices, equip them with skills, and create safe spaces where they
can learn, innovate, and lead. Most recently, in partnership with key stakeholders, SGAI
has advanced digital advocacy and mentorship programs that prepare young women and
girls to take ownership of their futures, influence policy, and transform their communities.
“As we mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to
breaking barriers and creating equal opportunities for every girl. We call on governments, communities, civil society, and the private sector to invest in girls’ education, health, safety, and leadership as a matter of urgency and justice.
“Girls are not just beneficiaries of change; they are drivers of transformation. When we
invest in them, we secure a brighter, fairer, and more sustainable future for all. Happy International Day of the Girl Child 2025!”
