A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, has called for the immediate cancellation of the ongoing Local Government elections in the state, citing widespread irregularities.
Speaking at Polling Unit 019 in Victoria Island Local Council Development Area, Senator Bucknor-Akerele expressed serious concern over what she described as logistical failures and deliberate attempts to disenfranchise voters.
She alleged that several polling units within the Victoria Island LCDA were either relocated or swapped, particularly toward the Muri Okunola axis, without adequate notice — a move she believes was aimed at frustrating the electoral process.
“I am calling for the cancellation of this election. People don’t even know where their polling units are anymore. It’s chaotic, and it’s unacceptable,” she told journalists.
The one time Lagos state Deputy Governor further accused the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) of operational lapses, saying the commission failed to ensure proper coordination.
At the time of her visit, voter turnout remained remarkably low.
In some polling units, there were no voters at all, while in others, youths were seen playing football on the streets instead of participating in the election.
Whether her call will lead to any suspension or review of the process remains unclear, as LASIEC has yet to respond.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates as they unfold.
