A building under construction has collapsed on Craig Street in the Shomolu area of Lagos State, sparking panic among residents and raising renewed concerns over building safety in the state.
The collapsed structure, identified as the second building on the left side of the street based on video footage obtained by our correspondent, gave way earlier today under still-unclear circumstances.
Dust and debris from the site covered the area, forcing pedestrians and nearby residents to flee for safety.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation of casualties or injuries.
Emergency response teams had yet to arrive at the site when initial video footage was captured.
The condition of workers, if any were on-site during the collapse, remains unknown.
Eyewitnesses describe hearing a sharp cracking sound moments before the structure crumbled.
“It happened very fast. There was no sign it was about to go down. People just started shouting and running,” said one resident who asked not to be named.
The incident has once again drawn attention to ongoing concerns around substandard construction practices and weak regulatory enforcement, especially in high-density areas like Shomolu.
Authorities from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) are expected to begin investigations into the incident.
This is a developing story. More updates — including eyewitness videos, statements from emergency responders, and possible casualty figures, will be provided as they become available.
