The Liberal Party of Canada under Mark Carney is projected to form the next government. The party has secured enough votes to edge out challenges from the Conservative Party of Canada and their leader Pierre Poilievre, who congratulated Carney on his win on Monday night.
Following the news, Carney spoke at a Liberal election party, calling for a united Canada.
“I have a question: Who’s ready to stand up for Canada with me?” asked Carney of the Liberal crowd in Ottawa, as he also gave insight into what the future holds:
“It is a time to be bold, to meet this crisis with overwhelming positive force of a united Canada, because we are going to build, baby, build.”
It was one of the most consequential votes in Canadian history, a battle set to the backdrop of increased tensions relating to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and trade war.
Outside of the race between the Liberals and Conservatives, the New Democratic Party saw their voter turnout plummet on April 28, as it appears unlikely that the NDP will secure enough seats to maintain official party status. Given the result, Jagmeet Singh announced that he will officially resign as party leader after eight years in the role.
The win for the Liberals is a remarkable feat, following the resignation of former prime minister Justin Trudeau and the prorogation of Parliament in January 2025. At the time, Poilievre and the Conservatives were leading in the polls and seemed destined to form a majority government.
However, with Mark Carney as their new leader, the Liberals were able to capitalize as the country saw a rise in nationalism in response Trump’s tariffs and threats of annexation. Behind the former central banker, the Liberals positioned themselves as the party better equipped to take on Trump, which ultimately culminated in today’s election win.
