Dr Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson and a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape, has passed away at the age of 71. His death was confirmed today.
He was reported to have died this morning at about 1.30am at Euracare hospital VI, from complications of his cancer.
Okupe, known for his outspoken political views and strategic roles in various administrations, served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He also played a significant role in the 2023 elections as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign before stepping down in December 2022 due to a money laundering conviction.
Despite controversies surrounding his political career, Okupe remained a formidable figure, later shifting his support to President Bola Tinubu’s administration and actively engaging in political discourse.
Political figures and associates across party lines have expressed shock and condolences over his passing. His contributions to governance, political strategy, and public affairs continue to shape discussions on Nigeria’s political history.
