The Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday embarked on a peaceful protest following unfulfilled implementation of an agreement by government to pay up three and half months of their salary.
The lecturers gathered at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) campus in Ijebu-Ode to register their displeasure over the perceived official non-challance towards their welfare.
The lecturers also expressed dismay at stagnated salary of academic staff in the last 15 years, arguing that the Nigerian government has continued to push ASUU to go on strike by turning deaf ears to their requests.
The protesters noted that a Professor in Nigeria now earn $400 per month, emphasizing that a full strike would commence in three weeks if government continues with this style.
Leaders of the protest noted that Nigerian universities need stringer intervention for them to be among the world best.
The Chairman of the TASUED ASUU, Dr Wale Ositoye who led the protest, told journalists that lecturers’ salaries remain have remained stagnant.
‘The academic staff salary still remains stagnant despite the harsh economic policies by the present government, such as withdrawal of fuel subsidy and the devaluation of naira, ’ Ositoye said.
