Pro-democracy group, Kwara Rebuilders says the recent release of timetable for local government election by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) underlines a great commitment to the long-awaited exercise.
The commission had earlier set September 21, 2024 for the LG polls, paving the way for the election of chairmen and councillors across the 16 local government areas of the state.
“We commend the commitment of KWSIEC despite naysaying from opposition elements and perpetual critics. They should keep their eyes on the ball, and go on to deliver a successful and hitch-free local government election in the state,” a statement by the group’s Publicity Secretary Abdullah Abdulganiy read on Monday.
“Kwara Rebuilders wishes to restate its readiness to resist the antics of any blackmail hub, contracted tyrants, imperial messengers, and incorrigible wailers in the name of civil group to thwart the elections.
“We have seen the timetable indicating various activities leading up to the exercise. It shows readiness on the part of the commission. KWSIEC should put in further efforts to see the actualisation of these planned activities within record time.”
The group charged the local electoral commission on integrity and transparency for the exercise, noting they are fundamental pillars of democracy.
“We also advocate popular participation. On this note, we urge the commission to engage holistically all the political parties, media, genuine civil society groups and other stakeholders for the success of the exercise. Everybody should be free to partake in the process and aspire for the available offices. It is a participatory democracy. They should however note that only a single person can occupy an office at a time. Everybody, meanwhile, wins when the atmosphere is free of rancour and violence despite diverse aspirations. Our prayer is therefore for everyone not to lose focus on the bigger picture which is the peace and harmony for which Kwara is known,” the statement added.
