A major shakeup has hit the Labour Party in Ogun State as one of the prominent members, Hon. Olufemi Thomas Afolabi, the party’s 2024 chairmanship candidate for Obafemi Owode Local Government, has formally resigned from the party.
Afolabi announced his departure in a formal letter addressed to the Ogun State Chairman of the Labour Party and routed through the ward and local government leadership. He said the decision followed extensive personal reflection and consultations about his political future.
In the letter, he stated that his decision followed deep reflection on his political direction and long-term goals.
He wrote, “After carefully evaluating my political direction, personal convictions, and continued commitment to service, I have concluded that it is necessary to pursue my aspirations through a different path that aligns more closely with my principles, objectives, and long term vision for effective service delivery to the people of Obafemi Owode LGA.”
Afolabi acknowledged the support he received from the party’s ward, local government, and state structures, noting that his departure was not out of bitterness. He described the move as a sincere and strategic decision taken for betterment and a conscientious step taken in good faith rather than an act of hostility.
He further requested that his name be removed from all Labour Party registers and official documents. He wished the party success in its future activities.
While he is yet to disclose his decision on joining any other party, reactions from party members and stakeholders are expected as his resignation continues to generate attention within the local political sphere.
More details may emerge as stakeholders react to his exit.
