*Prof. Adeyeye (centre) receiving her award

In a ceremony that brought together heads of state, ministers, parliamentarians, and Africa’s most distinguished business and public sector leaders, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), was presented with the Special African Leadership Commendation Award at the 16th African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA).
The event held at the historic Cholmondeley Room and Terrace, House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, London, on 3 July 2026.

The recognition, conferred by the Global Advisory Board of the African Leadership Organisation (ALO), the publisher of African Leadership Magazine, was awarded following a rigorous, merit-based screening and vetting process spanning several years, during which Prof. Adeyeye’s leadership trajectory and institutional impact were independently tracked and assessed by an international panel.

The award tells a story that every Nigerian should know. When Prof. Adeyeye assumed office as Director General of NAFDAC on 30 November 2017, she inherited an agency in deep institutional distress. The agency carried a debt burden of over ₦3.2 billion. Between 70 and 80 per cent of the equipment across NAFDAC’s seven laboratories was non-functional. There were no vehicles for inspection. Staff morale had collapsed under repeated industrial strikes. No Director had a NAFDAC-issued laptop. Digitisation was non-existent. And on the World Health Organisation’s Global Benchmarking scale of one to four, NAFDAC was rated below Level One. One international observer had described the agency bluntly as a “good-for-nothing agency.”

Less than a decade later, the same agency stands as one of the most credible regulatory bodies on the African continent.

Through fiscal discipline alone, Prof. Adeyeye cleared the inherited debt of over ₦3.1 billion within her first year in office, discovering in the process that ₦200 million of that debt was fictitious. She procured over 150 utility vehicles, invested over ₦7 billion in laboratory equipment, and equipped more than half of NAFDAC’s 2,000-plus workforce with laptops and desktop computers.

She digitised 90 per cent of the agency’s regulatory processes, instituted standard operating procedures across all functions, and pursued ISO 9001 certification, which NAFDAC achieved by 2019 and has maintained through recertification to date.

The global recognition that has followed is remarkable by any standard.

NAFDAC attained WHO Global Benchmarking Maturity Level 3 in March 2022, a distinction held by only 35 per cent of regulatory agencies worldwide, and was successfully re-benchmarked in June 2025.

The Central Drug Laboratory in Lagos achieved WHO Prequalification in September 2023.

Nigeria attained Pre-Accession Pre-Applicant status in the Pharmaceutical Inspection and Cooperation Scheme (PIC/S), a membership shared by only 50 countries globally.

In 2025, Nigeria became the 24th member of the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH), one of only 25 members among 194 regulatory agencies worldwide.

Through the Five Plus Five regulatory directive, Prof. Adeyeye drove a 70 per cent reduction in the importation of pharmaceuticals already being manufactured in Nigeria, significantly strengthening the domestic pharmaceutical industry. International pharmaceutical companies that left Nigeria in 2017 are now investing and reinvesting in the country, bringing technology transfer and global partnerships.

NAFDAC is now working towards WHO Maturity Level 4 and World Listed Authority status, milestones that would enable medicines manufactured in Nigeria to be traded freely across the African continent and globally, positioning Nigeria as a pharmaceutical export nation of international standing.

The two-day ABLA programme, themed “From Vision to Velocity: Driving Africa’s Next Wave of Growth and Leadership,” was held across two iconic London venues.

Day One took place at the GMT Suite, Hilton London Metropole, where Prof. Adeyeye delivered a keynote address on “The African University of the Future: Innovation, Relevance, and Global Competitiveness,” calling for the urgent alignment of African university curricula with global regulatory standards and the integration of digitisation across all academic disciplines. Her address drew wide commendation from the assembled leaders.

Day Two, the awards ceremony at the House of Lords, was hosted by Baroness Sandy Verma, with Lord Dolar Popat and Baroness Lindsay Northover attending as special guests.

The ALO International Advisory Council, chaired by H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, was represented by H.E. Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, former Vice President of Liberia, Gen. William Kip Ward, First Commander of US Africa Command, Hon. Nomvula Mokonyane, former Premier of Gauteng and Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress of South Africa, and Dr. Victor Oladokun, Communications Advisor to the President of the African Development Bank, among others.

Speaking after receiving her award, Prof. Adeyeye said:

“I accept this honour not for myself alone, but on behalf of the dedicated men and women of NAFDAC whose tireless work makes every achievement attributed to my leadership possible. When I assumed office in November 2017, NAFDAC was rated below the first rung of the WHO Global Benchmarking ladder. Today, we stand at Maturity Level 3, successfully re-benchmarked in June 2025, a distinction held by only 35 per cent of regulatory agencies worldwide. This recognition belongs to every member of the NAFDAC family.”

New cancer cases are projected to nearly double worldwide by 2050, with the disease expected to affect more than 90% of the global population in some way, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.

In a report released on Wednesday, the agency said cancer remains the world’s second-leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease, claiming more than 26,000 lives daily. It estimates there are currently nearly 10 million deaths and 20.6 million new cases annually, warning that without urgent action the latest figure will rise to 35 million by 2050. One in five people is expected to develop cancer during their lifetime, with lung cancer remaining its deadliest form.

Despite rapid advances in treatment, the WHO says survival increasingly depends on where patients live and their financial circumstances. Five-year survival for breast and childhood cancers exceeds 85% in high-income countries but falls below 45% in low-income nations, it estimates.

Twenty-three countries lack radiotherapy facilities, two-thirds do not include cancer care in universal health coverage, and treatment costs force up to 90% of patients in some regions to abandon care. Overall, at least 45% of patients face financial hardship, making cancer a leading cause of medical bankruptcy worldwide.

The agency estimates that, if current trends continue, cancer will affect 92% of people worldwide at some point in their lives by 2050, either through their own diagnosis or that of a close relative. The WHO urged governments, international organizations, and the private sector to adopt a “people-centered” approach by integrating cancer services from prevention to diagnosis and treatment into universal health coverage, strengthening support for patients and caregivers, and ensuring research and innovation expand access to treatment.

Dozens of countries are currently developing cancer vaccines using different approaches. Russia has been actively working on personalized mRNA cancer vaccines tailored to individual tumors. Two experimental therapies – Neooncovac for melanoma and Oncopept for colorectal cancer – were cleared for clinical use in March. More than 40 patients have since enrolled, with the first recipients already showing a strong immune response. The vaccines are expected to be provided free under Russia’s national health insurance system once their clinical effectiveness is confirmed.

The US, UK, Cuba, and China are also pursuing cancer vaccine development through approved treatments, clinical trials or personalized mRNA platforms.

EBC Financial Group says Nigeria has rebuilt confidence, but the question now is whether long-term investment, closer naira rates and deeper market trust support it.

Nigeria’s foreign reserves have climbed to about USD51 billion, a decade-plus high, according to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). EBC Financial Group (EBC) notes that this reflects stronger investor confidence, but the second half may show whether it holds, as the build rests on three cyclical drivers: oil earnings, short-term foreign money and a narrowing official-to-street naira gap.

Reserves rose from about USD32 billion in April 2024, during a dollar shortage, to about USD51 billion now, near the CBN’s target. Much came from two cyclical sources, strong oil earnings and money chasing high-yielding naira assets, so EBC expects the pace to slow or reverse. Fitch Ratings, a major international credit rating agency, expects a marginal decline to about USD47 billion by the end of 2026, citing higher spending and external pressures.

David Precious, Senior Market Analyst at EBC Financial Group, said, “Nigeria’s reserve build is real but may not be durable yet, because nearly all of the new money is the kind that can leave quickly. Of the USD10.37 billion that came in over the first quarter, the overwhelming majority was short-term portfolio funds rather than long-term investment, so a shift in oil prices, global interest rates or confidence in the naira might pull a large part of it straight back out.”

Most New Money Can Still Leave Quickly

The composition of the foreign inflows explains the caution over how long the build can last. The country attracted USD10.37 billion in foreign investment in the first quarter of 2026, up 83.83% year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Of that, USD9.86 billion or 95.09%, was portfolio money, largely short-term naira debt such as Treasury bills that investors can sell at the next auction, while foreign direct investment, the long-term kind that builds factories and jobs, was USD135.08 million, or 1.30%. Put simply, of each dollar coming in, about 95 cents can leave quickly and barely one cent stays.

That money supports reserves while it stays. Dollars brought in to buy naira assets add to market supply, letting the CBN hold more reserves and steady the naira. It leaves when conditions change. Nigeria earns most of its export dollars from oil and gas, so lower oil prices mean fewer dollars, and as a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) it cannot simply produce more, output capped by quota and reduced by theft and ageing fields. Higher global interest rates draw money toward safer returns abroad, and a weakening naira prompts investors to sell early. When oil fell in 2016 and 2020, foreign investors withdrew and could not convert naira to dollars as supply dried up, leaving the CBN to clear more than USD7 billion in trapped obligations into 2024.

The Oil Boost is No Longer Certain

Oil looked like a dependable source of the dollars behind the reserves only months ago. Earlier in 2026, concern over disruption around the Strait of Hormuz lifted crude prices, and stronger receipts flowed in, with crude oil export earnings of USD8.11 billion in the first quarter in the CBN’s balance-of-payments data. That support is now easing. The tension has subsided and Brent traded near USD72 on 29 June, down about 24% over the month, back to pre-conflict levels. With the price boost gone and output constrained, reserves are more exposed, leaning on non-oil earnings and investor patience rather than oil.

The Naira Still Trades at Two Prices

The naira has traded at two prices, an official rate and a higher parallel-market rate, and closing that gap into one trusted price is what many investors might watch most. Before committing funds, they may want assurance they can convert naira to dollars at a fair rate when they exit, and a wide gap revives the fear of being trapped that lingers from earlier shortages. The gap has narrowed to roughly NGN20 to NGN30, with the CBN’s official rate near NGN1,380 per dollar on 26 June against parallel-market quotes around NGN1,400. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) 2026 Article IV review urged Nigeria to depend less on this fast-moving portfolio money and to keep phasing out its multiple exchange-rate practices. The CBN’s Foreign Exchange Manual, in force from 1 June, is intended to make the market clearer, though such rules build confidence only once investors can freely trade dollars at the posted rate.

What could Make the Build Durable

A few signs that may show the build turning durable include a smaller gap between the official and street naira rates, more long-term foreign investment, and steadier oil earnings. A gap that stays small, now roughly NGN20 to NGN30, may mean investors trust the official rate and no longer need the street market. A clear rise in foreign direct investment, only USD135 million last quarter against USD9.86 billion of short-term money, might mean lasting capital is replacing funds that can leave at the next auction. Oil earnings that hold up, rather than sliding from the low USD70s, should help keep reserves steady, since oil and gas bring in most of Nigeria’s export dollars.

“Reserves built on money chasing high yields can fall as fast as they rose, as they did after the last two oil shocks, when investors left and the CBN spent years clearing a foreign-exchange backlog,” Precious added. “What holds through a downturn is slower money, direct investment, steady oil and non-oil export earnings and one credible naira rate, and that is the shift Nigeria has yet to make.”

NASCO Town Limited has appealed the recent judgment of the Lagos State High Court nullifying the Federal Government’s acquisition of 292 hectares of land and urged the public to refrain from conducting any transactions involving the disputed property pending the outcome of the appeal.

In a public notice issued by its management, the company said the judgment delivered in Suit No. ID/5709LM/2025 is not final, stressing that it has exercised its constitutional right of appeal and that the matter is now before the Court of Appeal.

The statement was issued in response to media reports on the High Court’s decision in a case concerning the ownership of the land known as NASCO Town.

The company reassured residents, tenants, Free Zone operators, investors, workers and other stakeholders that it would take all lawful measures to protect existing developments and preserve the subject matter of the appeal throughout the appellate process.

NASCO also issued a warning to prospective buyers, developers, surveyors, financial institutions and investors against purchasing, leasing, developing or entering into any transaction involving the approximately 292.428 hectares of disputed land until the appeal is finally determined.

It cautioned that anyone dealing with parties other than NASCO over the land would do so at their own risk and subject to the outcome of the pending appeal.

The company maintained that its title and possession of the land derive from Federal Government acquisition and lease documents, including Federal Government Notice No. 1138 published in Official Gazette No. 44, Volume 64 of September 8, 1977, as well as Government Notice No. 1130 published in Official Gazette No. 44, Volume 63 of September 2, 1976.

NASCO said members of the public should verify the official records and obtain independent legal advice before relying on contrary claims.

While expressing respect for the court, the company said it disagreed with the High Court’s decision and argued that its appeal raises significant legal issues relating to government acquisition, limitation, public purpose, possession, compensation, excision and the validity of its long-standing title and development activities.

According to the company, the disputed land is already developed and hosts residential estates, roads, infrastructure, Free Trade Zone operations, transit harbour facilities, businesses, workers and other third-party investments.

It warned that speculative transactions before the determination of the appeal could disrupt businesses, industries, investors, lenders and residents operating within the area.

NASCO further described the appeal as one with wider implications for legal certainty, investor confidence and industrial development, particularly regarding reliance on Federal Government acquisition, lease and allocation records.

The company reiterated its commitment to pursuing the matter through the judicial process while respecting the authority of the courts and protecting the interests of residents, tenants, investors and other stakeholders.

It added that NASCO Town was established to support residential, industrial, logistics and Free Trade Zone development, and that prolonged litigation has delayed planned investments in infrastructure, employment generation, schools, healthcare, emergency services and other community projects.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and the protection of all persons who have lawfully invested, leased property or reside within NASCO Town.

The one-act play, ẸBỌ (The Offering) will leave you gasping for more in a suspenseful atmosphere while peeling off the layered intricacies of friendship, love, faith, trust, matchmaking, betrayal and the usual festivities that surround wedding ceremonies in Lagos, Nigeria.

Presented by B-Rated Productions, ẸBỌ (The Offering) will be staged on Friday July 10th and Sunday July 12th, 2026 at the Guest Quarters (GQ), 16, Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos. On Friday, curtain rises by 7pm, while there will be two sessions on Sunday at 5pm and 7pm respectively.

The producer and actor Tosin Adeyemi said stepping into ĘBỌ (The Offering) “is the ultimate test of artistic discipline” because, as a one-woman show, the visible weight of the production rests squarely on her shoulders.

“On one hand, I am heavily involved as a producer, managing the entire project from budget allocation, to logistics and coordination. Balancing operations grit while trying to memorize lines, embody the character, and safely hold a deeply vulnerable, emotional space for the audience is an immense responsibility” Adeyemi added.

In the captivating play, Tosin Adeyemi as Simi Adeyinka-Cole, is doing what many of us do too well — getting dressed for someone else’s happiest day while quietly carrying every unfinished question about her own life.

Directed by Bimbo Olorunmola, ẸBỌ (The Offering) is funny. It’s honest. It’s all of us. While fielding question, Olorunmola said this weekend is a culmination of an incredible journey that will offer the audience a sumptuous and satisfying experience.

“The high point for me would be when Simi realizes that Kemi and aunty Ngozi colluded to match-make her with someone. On one hand, it feels like the ultimate betrayal where one’s best friend and confidante seemingly sides with everyone else in “trying to fix” Simi with a partner, whereas she sees herself as “complete and unbroken”. This is something Kemi knows more than anyone else that she strongly abhors, thus heightening the feeling of betrayal. On the other hand, Simi also understands that Kemi has acted purely out of love and a genuine interest in her well-being”, Olorunmola disclosed.

ẸBỌ (The Offering) is officially PG-rated rather than strictly age-restricted. There is nothing to stop a 12-year or 14-year-old from enjoying the stage play. The production simply speaks to an audience of any age bracket that is ready for profound, layered storytelling.

It’s all happening this weekend at GQ Lagos, 16 Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, with a show on Friday July 10th, by 7pm and two shows on Sunday July 12th, by 5pm and 7pm respectively. For tickets, scan on the barcode in the flyer.

Across Africa, talent is not in short supply. What is missing is the infrastructure that helps skilled professionals move from potential to progression, and from experience to long-term career momentum. Many already have the ability, ambition, and technical foundation to advance, but lack the structured support, career development, networks, visibility, and employer access required to turn that ability into sustainable success.

EMERGE brings these critical pieces together in one place. Built on a simple but powerful idea that Africa’s talent challenge is not a shortage of ability, but a shortage of the infrastructure needed to support, develop, and advance it, the platform brings together the elements of career development that too often sit apart: structured learning, professional diagnostics, mentorship, peer support, employer engagement, and access to opportunity.

For professionals, EMERGE provides greater clarity, confidence, skills, visibility, and support to progress with intention. For employers, it creates access to a stronger, better-prepared, and more visible talent pipeline. For the wider economy, it helps more of Africa’s young professionals move into roles where they can contribute, lead, and grow, strengthening organisations and labour markets across the continent.

Developed with support from the Mastercard Foundation, EMERGE is already home to a growing community of more than 1,700 young African professionals, creating a powerful network of emerging talent across the continent. Around six in ten EMERGE members are women, reflecting a deliberate commitment to widening access for talented professionals who are too often overlooked by traditional career pathways. Open to professionals across the continent, EMERGE is building a more inclusive and representative pipeline for Africa’s next generation of leaders.

Speaking at the launch, Marcia Ashong-Sam, Founder and CEO of TheBoardroom Africa, said: “The issue has never been a lack of capable talent in Africa. The real challenge is that access to opportunity remains uneven, and career progression is too rarely supported in a structured, intentional way. EMERGE was created to change that. We are building the career infrastructure that too many young professionals have had to navigate without: a platform that helps them translate ambition and ability into sustainable, meaningful careers, while connecting employers to a stronger and better-prepared pipeline of African talent.”

The platform gives members access to a dynamic mix of live masterclasses led by industry practitioners, career-focused programming designed to build resilience and progression, self-paced courses through its Learning Hub, and thoughtfully selected career opportunities with some of Africa’s most innovative employers.

The EMERGE journey begins with the Leadership Compass, the platform’s proprietary baseline assessment, which gives each member a clearer view of where they are in their professional journey and where focused development could unlock the greatest growth. Insights from the assessment help shape a more personalised pathway through the EMERGE experience.

For employers, EMERGE offers a seamless way to invest in professional development at scale. Organisations can enrol staff cohorts on the platform, giving their teams continuous access to high-quality career development tools, masterclasses, learning pathways, and progression-focused support through the programmatic rhythm of the EMERGE experience. Employers also benefit from aggregate cohort insights, enabling them to track progress, understand development priorities, and make more informed decisions about talent growth, retention, and internal mobility. In this way, EMERGE becomes more than a learning platform; it becomes a practical development pathway for building stronger, more prepared leadership pipelines from within.

Ashong-Sam added, “The needs of employers and professionals are closely connected. Employers want people who can grow with the business, contribute to strategy, and take on greater responsibility over time. Professionals want work that gives them progress, purpose, and financial stability. EMERGE brings both sides into the same conversation, with a focus on readiness, development, and opportunity.”

The platform reflects TheBoardroom Africa’s wider work to strengthen leadership ecosystems across the continent. Over the past decade, the firm has worked with senior executives, board leaders, and institutions across African markets and globally, giving it direct insight into the gaps that begin much earlier in people’s careers. EMERGE applies that experience at an earlier stage, supporting professionals before they reach senior roles and building a stronger pipeline of talent prepared for greater responsibility and decision-making.

EMERGE is open to professionals across Africa and will continue to expand its membership while engaging employers looking to strengthen their talent pipelines.

National coordinator of the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) programme at the Bank of Industry (BOI), Ife Adebayo, will deliver the keynote address at the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit 2.0 on Tuesday, August 11, at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The announcement was made by Mighty Media Plus Network LTD, the parent company of online newspaper QEDNG, on Wednesday.

Themed Creativity, Culture and Nigeria’s Next Chapter,” the summit will examine how stronger partnerships among government, investors and the creative community can unlock opportunities for growth, job creation and sustainable development.

A technology and innovation professional, Mr Adebayo has spent more than 16 years working across Germany, the United Kingdom and Nigeria, leading programmes that support innovation, entrepreneurship and enterprise development. His experience spans the public and private sectors as well as partnerships with international development institutions.

He currently leads the African Development Bank-supported iDICE programme at the Bank of Industry, coordinating the day-to-day implementation of the $617 million initiative. The programme is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s technology and creative ecosystem through skills and enterprise development, access to finance for startups and an enabling environment for businesses.

Before taking up the role, Adebayo served as special assistant on innovation to the Nigerian vice president from 2015 to 2023. In that position, he advised the Federal Government on innovation policy and strategy for Nigeria’s digital technology and creative ecosystem, while contributing to initiatives that promoted technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.

His work has also involved major projects supported by the World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency and Islamic Development Bank.

Adebayo earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ilorin and a master’s degree in business information systems from the University of East London.

QEDNG publisher, Olumide Iyanda, said Adebayo’s work reflects the kind of collaboration between government, finance and creative enterprise that the summit seeks to encourage.

“This year’s summit is about shaping Nigeria’s next chapter through creativity and culture. That conversation cannot happen without addressing innovation, investment and the policies that help creative businesses grow. Ife Adebayo brings practical experience from working at the centre of those conversations, and we are delighted to have him deliver the keynote address,” Mr Iyanda said.

Adebayo takes over from Dr Nkiru Balonwu, founder of The Africa Soft Power Group, who delivered the keynote address at the inaugural QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit in 2025. That maiden edition attracted leading voices from business, government and the creative industries and focused on financing as a catalyst for the growth of Nigeria’s creative economy.
