The leadership of Kwara State University (KWASU) has introduced a ₦100,000 waiver in tuition fees for students living with disabilities.
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, during an event to mark the 2024 International Day of Persons With Disabilities.
The announcement, contained in a statement issued by the university’s Acting Director of Relations, Dr. Saidat Aliyu, also revealed the implementation of a ₦50,000 monthly allowance for staff with disabilities, alongside plans to increase employment opportunities for sign language interpreters.
Speaking at the event organized by KWASU’s Disability Support Office and the Department of Special Education, Professor Jimoh highlighted the institution’s commitment to fostering inclusion and accessibility. He said, “The school has granted ₦100,000 waiver for all students living with a disability, a ₦50,000 monthly allowance for staff with disabilities. This also includes increased employment opportunities for sign language interpreters.”
Themed “Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Creating an Accessible and Equitable World,” the event provided a platform to discuss innovative ways to enhance inclusivity within academic environments.
Confirming the development in a telephone interview, the state chairman of People Living With Disabilities, Comrade Bashir Yusuf, expressed appreciation for the initiative. “Yes, it’s true, and its implementation has started. We will embark on compiling the data of the beneficiaries to determine the figures. In the meantime, we have sought an audience with the VC over the development and are awaiting a response,” Yusuf said.
